Tayeb Salihs allra mest kända roman är Utvandringens tid, Mawsim al-hijra ila'l-shamal, på engelska Season of Migration to the North. Den är en skildring av utvandring och hemkomst, om att vilja komma hem och höra till men tvingas inse hur åren borta från hembyn förändrar en människa. Boken utgavs i Beirut 1967 och mer än två decennier senare beskrevs den i New York Times Book Review som "a brilliant miniature of the plight of Arabs and Africans who find themselves no longer sustained by their past and not yet incorporated into a viable future."

It is a complex work with a theme of deep alienation, a sense of otherness linked to Africa's relationship with the Western world. The story is told by an anonymous Sudanese-born narrator who grows increasingly obsessed with his doppelganger, a man whose life and career seems to have foreshadowed his own. The narrator has recently returned from poetry studies at Oxford University in England, and upon his first morning back in his home village, sees a familiar palm tree, and thinks, "All was still well with life. I looked at its strong straight trunk, at its roots that strike down into the ground, at the green branches hanging down loosely over its top, and I experienced a feeling of assurance."
